Oreo Cake Balls

These bite-sized sweet treats are the perfect addition to celebration.  You could even give them to your friends or colleagues for a holiday or birthday gift.  My friend Kate made them for me for my birthday this year, and they were such a hit, I had to try them myself.  Very easy, and impossible to mess up – give them a try!

1 bag Oreos (36 cookies)

8 oz softened Cream Cheese

22 oz Chocolate Morsels (I prefer to use 1 bag white chocolate, 1 bag milk or dark)

Sprinkles to Decorate (optional)

Place the Oreo cookies in a food processor, and blend until completely crushed. Add in the cream cheese, and combine until blended (a ball of ‘dough’ should form).  Carefully remove the blade from the food processor, and refrigerate the mix for 20-30 minutes, or until it is more firm (making it easier to roll).  When you remove from the refrigerator, start forming small bite-sized balls (1″-1.25″).  Place evenly on a baking sheet, and put in the freezer for 15 minutes.  While the cake balls are freezing, temper the chocolate in the microwave.  (Tempering Chocolate: Put morsels in a microwave safe bowl, and heat for 30 seconds, then stir.  Repeat until chocolate is completely melted and smooth).

Remove the cake balls from the freezer.  One by one, cover in the warm chocolate (I like to use two toothpicks to ensure it is completely covered).  Once coated, carefully remove and place on a lined baking sheet.  Put some sprinkles on top for a decorative touch, and repeat until all cake balls are covered in chocolate.  Place in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving.  I like the contrast between the white and dark chocolate, but use your favorite – the sprinkles can make these festive for any occasion.  You could also put these on a stick, and make cake pops!
